The Temptations had a break-through, cross-over hit with "My Girl," which turned out to be the first in a remarkably long string of hits. But where were they crossing over from? The Billboard R&B chart had a number of hits from the group but they hadn't had a Top 100 Hit before.
The R&B chart was, in effect, a race chart and The Temptations confounded segregation by race/music. With the rise of Civil Rights and the Age of Aquarius, there was great promise that race would slowly decrease in separating us from each other.
The Temptations were the leading edge of a generation of African-American Motown artists that crossed over the race line and enriched (and continues to enrich) pop music. Music played a subtle but important role in brining divergent people together.
