Ellen Marie Mottaz, 51, of Hallsville died Thursday, Dec. 2, 2004. A memorial service will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, at First Christian Church in Columbia. Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 5, at Parker Funeral Service.
The daughter of Dorsey R. and Geraldine Reese Martin was born July 18, 1953, in Columbia. On June 26, 1976, she married Fred Mottaz in Columbia, and he survives.
She was active in 4-H and enjoyed showing both livestock and youth arts at the Boone County Fair. She twice showed the Grand Champion Boone County Ham.
She graduated from Hickman High School in 1971 and received both her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from the University of Missouri-Columbia, where she was a member of Zeta Tau Alpha.
She was an avid MU football and basketball fan. She attended every MU home football game for 33 years.
Besides her family, teaching was her life. She provided more than 25 years of service to public education as a teacher, mentor and literacy leader at schools in Camdenton and Hallsville and at Blue Ridge and Derby Ridge elementary schools in Columbia. She was selected as Columbia’s kindergarten-through-third-grade educator of the year in 2002.
Survivors also include three children, Elizabeth of Columbia and Brian and Stephanie of the home; her father; a sister, Kay Beissenherz and husband Bill; a brother, Stephen D. Martin and wife Terri; an aunt, Diana Groshong and husband Kee; four nephews; and a grandchild, Elayna, all of Columbia.
She was preceded in death by her mother.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to either First Christian Church or the Derby Ridge Literacy Fund.
