Glenda & Lucy
Like a significant cohort of our classmates, Glenda Semmons Olivas Magnus lives in the Kansas City area. Her three-bedroom house is near the State Line between Kansas and Missouri where she and her new husband Bob Magnus tend to their three dogs: 12-year old greyhound Misty, 7-year old greyhound Maggie, and 12-year old mini-Schnauzer Lucy. They enjoy their hot tub in a beautiful backyard, flower gardening and traveling. Their home is close to the well known Kansas City Plaza and Loose Park where they can walk the dogs.
Glenda & Bob Magnus
Glenda has a 25-year old daughter (Katie, a social worker in Overland Park, Kansas) from a previous marriage that ended in 2001. She met Kansas City-resident Bob Magnus on Match.com in June 2009 and was married six months later in Hawaii on the day after Christmas. After returning from their cruise ship honeymoon, Glenda became an instant grandmother to Bob’s four grandchildren.
“Glenie” received her AA degree in 1973 from Columbia College, then went to Research School of Nursing in Kansas City and graduated in 1978. In 33 years, she has done almost every kind of nursing: morning, evening and overnight shifts in a hospital, in a doctor’s office, pediatric and home health nursing, hospice, and now for the past 13.5 years as a school nurse. Glenda was named "School Nurse of the Year" in 2008 for the Kansas and Missouri school nurses. That was quite an honor. Hospice nursing was the biggest challenge because it taught her about how to determine priorities at the end of life. Learning how one lets go and dies with dignity was often tempered in the context of families coming together after many years of division.
Her current work as the school nurse at St. Ann Catholic School rewards her love of teaching and working with children – her first love in nursing. Glenda is not only the school nurse, she is the entire medical team. She is always working towards stretching the budget for the betterment of the student at her school. In the process, she has gained the trust and respect families, teacher and administrators.
Glenda is one of the first to upload her pushpins on the 1971 Kewpie google map featured on this site. You can track the places that have been important to her: Amsterdam, Frankfurt and Münich to visit three former exchange students she’s hosted from 1998-2004. It’s easy to add your own pushpins to the googlemap – Glenda will testify how easy it is when you see her at the reunion or you can check our online directions.
Glenda, Judy Bass, Jill Baxter
Glenda has decided to make the reunion a priority this year. She attended the 10-year reunion and that felt too much like high school so she skipped the 20-year reunion. By the time the 30-year reunion came around she went and had a blast – she loved seeing everyone and hearing about their children and their work. She had such a good time, she went on the 31st reunion cruise organized by Mark Heisner in Summer 2002.
At our 40-year reunion, she is planning on spending time kicking up her heels with her best friend Judy Bass and Jill Baxter and looking forward to reconnecting with many former classmates. Judy and Glenda celebrated their 50th year of friendship in May 2009 by taking a fun trip to Florida to celebrate.
