"You can never go home again."
Don't believe it. Rob Bartel spent a couple of decades in Portland, Oregon working as a software developer and moved back to the Columbia area in the last few years to see after his parents.
Rob is our database guru behind the 2011 Reunion. And we're happy about it.
He continues to work for the same company but now tele-commutes. And now he lives in the country-side outside of Columbia and has fallen in love with his former hometown. He says he sees the city with new eyes and appreciates the juxtaposition of small-big, simple-complex, public-private, personal-community qualities that all native Columbians cherish.
Jim Morrison attitude.
Rob has always considered himself a nerd. However, based on pictures from his high school years, he comes off more like the Doors' Jim Morrison but with a trombone; a pocket protector is the only give-away that he might have nerd tendencies. But he had that...how do you say jeune c'est qua? I don't know French, but I think it means "young-you-know-what."
But there are those early pictures of Rob. Those piercing eyes. That curling lip. That strong jawbone. That serious demeanor. That haircut. Take a deep look...Jimmy Dean? Ronald Reagan? John Wayne? Our hero.
