Our Man in Moscow transmits the following August 23, 2011 dispatch:
Wish I could be at the reunion. I'm writing you from Moscow, where I've lived for more than 17 years now. My Hickman classmates set me on this course--I remember Katy McKinin and David Tinsley and some others encouraging me to take Russian with them senior year, and I did and then continued with it at college. After college I went to law school, at UNC-Chapel Hill, and was in a law office in Chicago one day when I got a call from Katy McKinin--1981, I think it was. She was in Chicago, and told me about her experiences as an exchange student in Bulgaria and Leningrad. I later applied to that exchange program and ended up at Moscow State University for an academic year in 1983-84. After that period in the Soviet Union, I had a fellowship in D.C., and then worked for the federal judiciary for nine years--two years as a law clerk to a judge in Western Kentucky, and a few years each for a couple of federal judicial agencies in Washington. I was doing some translations of Soviet legal materials into English on the side. In 1994, I moved to Russia to work on a rule of law program funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID). I thought I would stay a couple or so years. But between working for projects and then for USAID itself at the U.S. Embassy, I've been in Russia since 1994. So, something I started my senior year at HHS has turned out to be a major part of my life. While living here I have traveled all over Russia, and to many parts of Europe (often to France, where I use the French I studied at HHS and later) and some in the Middle East, North Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, and Central and South America. I continue to fool around with photography and have photos on the website www.pbase.com/patricksphotos
I caught up with Dennis Powell in New York City several times in the 1990s and early 2000s, and stay in touch with a few classmates. I visited Jerry Ward in Seattle in 2005 and also saw Bill Simmons and Steve Nowell (HHS '72) there. We spoke by phone with Jon Graznak.
I would be glad to hear from classmates, and really wish I could be there!
You guys have a great time!
