The search for missing Kewpies has been a remarkable success. Since the effort was launched on February 1, 2011 545 Kewpies from the Class of 1971 have submitted their current contact information or have been "found" by a team of Kewpie Sleuths that we have called Sleupies. Being found has often confused people since they usually thought they knew where they were all along. A better way of saying "missing" is that Kewpie Database Central has been deficient. All the same, updating 545 folks' contact information in 6 months is pretty cool.
By May 1, about 80% of the Class of 1971 had responded to our requests to be "found." Since then, we have had to search and rescue this data through Active Searches. The search has been rewarding. This is a report on the status of some of those searches.
Janelle (Hoffman) Patterson lives in Columbia where she works at a veterinary hospital. She drives a red convertible with a license plate that says JNELL(e).
Thanks to Sleupie Patti P. Maxine (Taylor) Nelson* was located working at Jefferson Junior High School. Maxine has been helpful in locating a handful of additional "missing" Kewpies.
Without Sleupie Debbie P's help, we wouldn't know that Mike Adams had moved to another address in Shawnee KS. Invitations sent to an old Kansas City-area address were returned "addressee unknown."
Gayle Burton is living in Haiku between the cities of Sonnet and Quatrain, Hawaii. (That's a joke, son.) She has also returned to her original last name.
Thanks to Sleupie Bill M. for finding and then sharing the information!
Author Susan (King) Salzar lives in Columbia where she wrote the historical novel about the Civil War in Missouri, "Up from Thunder." She is working on her second novel. Her husband is a doctor at the University of Missouri hospitals.
Betty (Warren) Washington was at our 35th Reunion and she talked about her family and her life. But we had lost track of her contact information (our bad). Darlene D. (Class of '72) played the role of Sleupie and passed along her street address since Betty doesn't do the internets and youtubes. But she is most certainly a resident of that fair city known as Columbia. We have corrected our boo boo misplacing her contact information AND we initiated another member of the League of Sleupies: Darlene D.
Scott Ellis lives near Hulen's Lake in Columbia. He teaches in the Columbia Public Schools but says he won't be at the reunion. Thanks to Sleupie Patti P. for providing the clue.
Lorna Tapia's father was the source of information about her whereabouts but it took Sleupie Dianne M. to suss him out in Scottsdale AZ. She called the good doctor and reports that Lorna now lives in McGaheysville VA. That's how it works - an easy call to someone who knows someone. Voila.
Sleupie Don Stamper has talked with Justine's brother Mitch to learn that she lives in the Dallas suburb of Denton. Cool thing is, she lives in a residential neighborhood that features a private airstrip. You can see where she parks her plane. Her married name is Justine (Moore) Slaughter. We haven't heard if she'll fly up to the reunion and give everybody a ride. Crossing fingers...
Sleupie Debbie P. is one of our stalwarts, capable of leaping tall buildings in a trice or a nonce or something. Thanks must go to Ms P who has found Ms Teaff whose married name is Debra (Teaff) Oyler from Stover MO.
Christine (Neal) Jensen* is doing important work for our Wounded Warrior Program in and lives in Florida. Check out the comment she submitted and her profile. It's great to make a re-connection with Christine.
Sometimes it works this way. One of your friends hears mention that you're being counted among the missing. And then you take the situation in your own hands: you count yourself among the found by stepping forward. Nellie now goes by Aurita (Prince) Caldwell* and is living in Florissant MO. We are so happy that she has joined the 1971 HHS facebook group and count the days when we will see her at the reunion.
Tim Timmerman* was never really missing. In fact, no Kewpie is ever missing. The fact is that we lose track of friends and neighbors. A reunion is an excuse to re-connect with classmates...and shared experiences and stories. The story about Tim is that he works for the Columbia Police Department and is seen quite often around Columbia. You may have seen him and forgotten that he was a 1971 Kewpie.
Coy Langreder McWaters* is a new name. The mystery man was not such a mystery afterall. Sleupie George G. knew the right clue.
Coy lives outside the small Kentucky town of Bardwell. Coy will be at the reunion; his buddies are all looking forward to seeing him: Jerry LaBrue, Max Fisher, George Gibson and Dale Chrisman.
Judith Elaine (Dowell) Shackleford's names was in the phonebook but it took Sleupie Debbie P. to find her name in the phonebook in Columbia MO. Many phonebooks, only one Judith Elaine (Dowell) Shackelford.
Robert T. (stands for Tom) Waters was located in Alexandria VA by Sleupie Charlie W. The search for Tom was complicated and non-linear but we found our man! Check out his picture with his dog.
How can someone go unnoticed in Columbia, Missouri? It's not a megalopolis or an urban jungle. Jim Pettit (left) is in an unlit room in Central Missouri, somewhere. Someone should turn on the lights so we could recognize him.
Our records hold out one, faint clue for Debbie (Maxwell) Mason's whereabouts: her married name. We depend on Sleupies everywhere to fill in the details of her profile. We don't know her city, state or zip; we don't know her phone number or email. Where should we start? Help provide any shred of information here.
Mary Kelly has always lit up the rooms she enters. We're just not sure which rooms they are nowadays. Our records show that she was last on LaSalle Place in Columbia, Missouri. You can put some light on the subject by sharing what you know right here.
Your editor remembers that Kristine (Tapp) Burnham (right) always had this exact smile every day. Last we knew, her married name in Columbia MO was Burnham but we don't have a mailing or email address. If you figure it out, help us by dropping the information here, OK?
Amy Ellen Bassett may not be on your radar but her family will know where she's living and what she's doing. They live on Jake Lane in Columbia MO. That's all the clues we have for finding Amy. Maybe they could fill in the blanks for us...
Pam (Smith) Marinelli was last known to live in Clark, Missouri. We can't find any Marinelli's in Clark or the surrounding area. And finding any Smith is like trying not to find hay in a haystack. Maybe you know where she is?
Your editor is embarrassed to admit that he never made the mental connection that Ray and Bill Idle might be twins. Did they look so unlike each other? Looking at their pictures now, side-by-side, it's impossible not to notice. Chalk it up to an oblivious teen psyche. But now we need to find Bill -- Ray is on Rangeline Road in Columbia. Where is Bill?
After leads to the wrong "Tom Worstell" in Kansas City (who turns out to be a terrific good sport), no one knows where our Tom Worstell has gone to. Tom has relatives in Columbia. Do you know them? Drop a dime.
A mystery: Vickye Campbell's contact information is in the Kewpie Database Central as Benedict Campell on West Rollins Road in Columbia, Missouri.
Benedict is a few years younger than those graduated from Hickman in 1971. Is he a brother? cousin? And that doesn't answer the real question: what is the contact information for Vickye Campbell? What can you share, Holmes?
Your editor does not recall ever seeing this intelligent, confident face. But that isn't a problem because there is such a robust, connected network of Kewpies who will know Bonnie and where she is and what she's doing...and they'll enter her contact information right here. But it still hasn't happened and we're hoping you're the next Sleupie with a connection with Bonnie Cockrell.
Joe Edmondson attended Jeff Jr. He is remembered but no one has stepped forward with contact information. For all we know, he hasn't heard that there is a 40th Reunion taking place.
Our background on Eugenie Baker comes from another reunion website, classmates.com. She left news on that site some time ago that she had been living in Pittsburg MO. She attended New Haven Elementary and Hickman HS. She has a grown son and daughter. You can read her cameo biography on her profile. We're still missing her contact information -- help out.
Our information on Lindy Burdick's last whereabouts (ten years ago) is pretty detailed: Dogwood Acres on Lamppost Court in Sunrise Beach MO. Problem is, we can't get confirmation using the usual internet tools. If you know where Lindy is these days, confirm what we may already know.
Here's one of the more unusual set of clues for a missing Kewpie: we know the location and phone number but don't have a picture nor do we have a street address.
Terry Ross apparently lives in Brunswick MO. If you're brave enough, you can find his phone number at dexknows.whitepages.com. Call him. Go ahead. When you get his address or email, put what you learn here and we'll make sure he knows about the reunion.
The scant clues we have to finding Mary Anne (Gilbert) Lee is her maiden name, Gilbert, and her married name, Lee.
We don't have any more that will help find her except what you may know. If you knew her at Hickman, you may know a little bit more and can provide a clue.
David Frederick Wright does not live in Columbia or in any other nearby towns based on what we can learn from dexknows.whitepages.com. Based on the same reference, there are 125 David Wrights in Missouri. Any ideas where to start? West Virginia? Guam?
